It's extremely sad to see the loss of life and property - but I'm having a hard time REALLY feeling bad for the people who chose to stay there or chose to NOT seek shelter, even though the states had an evacuation of the area 4 or 5 days before the storm hit. It was NO secret or surprise that a very deadly storm was on its way...

I somewhat agree with you, some intelligent people (like those who stayed because they were tired of false alarms) could have and should have left. However, a good number of the people who remained:
- were physically or mentally incapacitated
- were elderly
- were ill
- were VERY poor, lived in rural areas, and had no transportation

That's what I intended to say in my post - there are always people who can't make it out, but there are those people who try to be all hardy saying they'll just stay becuase they made it through other hurricanes.

What really despised me the most are the people that took advantage of this situation and looted businesses out of greed.

I am against looting - but look at it this way. If they are looting grocery stores, its not like the stores are loosing any MORE money. Chances are the food will go stale by the time they re-open anyways... either way, it's not right - but it's not like the grocery stores will be loosing money.

But everything else (like electronics) is just stupid.

How was it not a required evacuation? I remember for hurricane in FL, they announced that you had to evacuate a lot. And then a cop showed up at the door and said "You have 3 hours to evacuate" and that you had to leave (no choice in the matter).

Why were those people looting for TVs, jewelry, stereos, and the like? The pawn shops will be closed for weeks!!!!!

It's one thing to take refrigerated and frozen food from a grocery store. It's a whole nother thing to take merchandise from a Wal-Mart or Walgreens. I hope those looters caught on camera are eventually hunted down and arrested.

Sorry, but I don't feel bad for those scum-of-the-earth looting booger-eating dirtbags. They are common criminals taking advantage of a situation and are just bad apples.

I feel bad for the good people that are suffering from this storm.

I saw on the news last night that the police were fighting off looters trying to break into CHILDRENS' HOSPITAL where they still had 100 patients!!!! How low is THAT?!?!?!?!?!

Heard this yesterday.......
Evacuees already in Houston (went there prior to the storm and Superdome evac) want to be able to shack up in the Astrodome and check out of their hotels, because they are running out of money and feel they ought to be able to stay and eat for free like the rest of the refugees. Kicker is they are being refused.

How do you feel about this?

My gut says to let them in too, but how do you weed out the leaches? Too much chaos already, just more to manage......so if you had stayed behind and gone to the superdome instead of leaving on your own nickel and gone elsewhere, you can get aid faily easily.

Not to say this is a good way of life, but desperate times call for desperate measures....

This whole thing is so complicated.

I discuss a similar topic with one of my mentor. He said, “The only way to give unconditionally and maturely is 1st taking good care of yourself and your own needs, or else you will become somebody’s burden.” And one way to know if a person is truly well-grown, sacrifice it is - with the whole heart. That means no blaming, no asking for payback. Sacrifice toward your children, family, Country, neighbors are some examples.

Anyone else hear the reports of sniper shots at the childrens hospital down there? I doubt it's a real sniper, just someone being an asshole.

Anyone ever see the movie black hawk down??

From CNN:

FEMA chief: Victims bear some responsibility

Brown pleased with effort: 'Things are going relatively well'

"Considering the dire circumstances that we have in New Orleans -- virtually a city that has been destroyed -- that things are going relatively well," Brown said."

IS THIS GUY F***** CLUELESS!?!?!?!??

Unbelievable!!!! I understand the magnitude of the evacuation challenge BUT it has been 5 days and the vast majority of the people STILL have not been evacuated. Worse yet, they don't even have a CLUE as to when they will be evacuated!!

After 5 days, if buses can get IN to the area, WHY AREN'T DOZENS OF TRACTOR TRAILERS TAKING IN TANKERS OF FRESH WATER AND DRY STAPLE FOOD?????????? HARRY CONNICK GOT IN HIS CAR AND DROVE RIGHT IN!!!!

I am appalled at how poorly this has gone after 5 days, and the top guy in charge says things are going relatively well.

Just checking in to say I'm still here. Baton Rouge has more than doubled in size in the last few days. Everything's in chaos. I don't think people realized how rough of a city New Orleans was before the storm. It's all spilling out into the streets in BR now. It's pretty crazy. You can't even go to the store to buy toilet paper and bread, and now restraunts are running out of food. Did I mention the car jackings and armed robberies?

Glad to hear that you are safe and have internet access. Is school going to start really soon? Heard that there are engineers flying from different states trying to help. Hope the sewer system will soon work.

It never ceases to amaze me to see the depths that "civilized" human beings will dip to. Hell dogs don't kill each other out of fun. Sometimes I think that we as humans should really be at the bottom of the evolutionary scale
