I think the proper name is parking brake?? Becuase it was designed to keep your car from rolling down a hill if it were in neutral.

The parking brake (ebrake/emergency brake) is used more for parking than during driving (the sport enthusiast driver who uses during driving not included). It could come in handy if your brakes ever go out (knock on wood) [thumb].

I have used the parking/e-brake/emergency brake during instruction in HP driving schools, and car cantrol clinics. I have also used the one in my pickup once for a real emergency, but you do have to be careful. You do not want to use it for parking in the winter, due to freezing as the pads may freeze to the hub. I do not use it when parking in my garage either. At HP driving schools we do not recommend their use directly after spending several minutes on the track. We recommend leaving the car in reverse or 1st gear. Just some thoughts.

Heh the one time my friend pulled the handbrake to see how it would stop the car going 30 mph, it took about 10 seconds till the car stopped. Our van (has the pedal emergency brake) going up my driveway 10 mph took about 15 seconds to stop with the brake pushed down the entire way. Not very useful.

My best friend spun his moms hyuandai (or however you spell it) when he pulled the E-brake. Took out a few mailboxes and ended up in someones yard...... thank god i wasn't with him. I only call it an E-brake b/c you're only gonna use it in an extreme, last ditch, emergency...

The official name for this hand brake is called the "E-Brake", which stands for Emergency brake. For manual transmission (and automatic also), you are supposed to leave your car in gear every time you park (or "P" for automatic). Sometimes on a steep hill, leaving your car in gear is not good enough, so the weight of the car is enough to get the engine to turn this letting the car start rolling. This is where your E-Brake comes in...it is your emergency brake (backup) that stops your car from just rolling away if something like that every happens. People refer to it as the hand brake as manual transmission drivers use it when they have come to a full stop on a hill and they want to start moving again (because the car will just roll backwards without the brake, and that is not good for the tranny and for the car behind you).
Also, you are NOT supposed to use the hand-brake when you are moving...it does not do anything and it will f*ck up your brakes!! When you are moving, the weight/intertia of the car is just way too much for the hand-brake...like I said, it only works when you are not moving.

i had no idea you could use the ebrake if you came to a stop on a hill. i usually slam on the gas and put into 1st gear in situations like that. i definitely will experiment this weekend.[hihi]
