I've been reading the latest edition of Roundel.........since Jungle thought I should be exposed to something other than Cosmopolitan.............here is my question.

In reading a couple of articles, the male authors of those articles refer to their BMW car as a "Him." I was just curious about the terminology. Don't most men consider their car a "her?"[paranoid]

depending on the situation it is different. talking with friends about it in german language it is male. female somehow sounds not right. in english on the otherhand i think her sounds way better. especially as it is common to call the car babe or baby. that is just too female to call the baby a him, correct?!

Most people consider their car a 'her' in the same way you consider an animal a 'her' and a ship or a plane a 'her'.

Where that comes from, I don't know, but I would expect it involves the emotion one feels over such things and in any event is really a remnant of a bygone era.

very good point ryan.

I dont think my car brings such emotional meaning for me to give it a male or femal pretense. I just call it a car, like if i messed it up, i would say poor car.

many languages use la and el for a title to everything. hell, german does it but not that way, rather die, der, das, den, dem, ... what ever they all are, but i guess that might not have anything to do with it because this issue is more of an emotion. then again, i dont know languages came up with if a object should have male or female dominance.

Maybe its like, if the car represents beauty, its a she and if its power, its a he.
-whatever

Storms use to only be "hers," now they are "his and hers!" I still prefer a "her" storm...

I agree. The term "her" has been around for a very long time for guys to describe their cars. I refer to "my car" that way sometimes, sometimes not. [:)]

I think people use "she" attitude when they perceive the car to be very complex ... like women. You never hear people give "she" anotations to stuff like bolts and screw drivers... only when you refer to a complex machine that you can't really understand.. it becomes she.
