Hurricane Charley

Was anybody else affected by the hurricane? It was predicted to hit close to me in Sarasota but instead went towards Orlando, where I'm moving tomorrow. My brother currently lives there and had his car parked outside during the hurricane. A tree fell on it. There's a picture attached, its an S2000 btw. Our recreational center on campus (university of central florida) was totally damaged and power was out for a while. Oh and the list goes on... have any of yall ever experienced a hurricane and its effects?

I live inland here in Baton Rouge, but we had 3 come through one fall a few years back. They cancelled class and I went and stayed with my sister in Alabama. We never get the high winds here, but we do get all the rain. All the rivers and bayous flood and it's a big mess.

And then back home in Tennessee we would get tornados left and right. Those messed some things up. I can't complain too much because our family owns a glass shop in Nashville, so when the tornados would hit we'd get super busy.

Yes I was. I will be going there for a month to help out our offices in Tampa and Orlando.

Damn, that sucks. Never experienced a hurricane before. We just get earthquakes over here. I did experience a typhoon when I was on vacation overseas. I think that's sorta similar.

being a previous floridian, I can say hurricanes are one of the most dangerous faces of nature that we see on a 'regular' basis. I think it was Kate, back in the mid 80's - hit us a week before Thanksgiving, came in from the gulf, and pounded Tallahassee (45 miles inland) like nuts (Cat 2 storm). Without power for a week, no Turkey day for us. a tornado missed our house by a matter of yards, taking the tops of trees off in a half mile long strip right beside our house, across the street, and deeper into the woods. And I did not find a single tree top it ripped off..

Nasty stuff, everyone wants a home along the coast, but wait until you see your insurance rates...

Ya, I used to live in Florida when i was a kid. I remember two Hurricanes actually. One missed us by a lot, and the other hit pretty close. I think my whole family left our riverfront home and went to a friends house that was more protected. We got lucky, only a few palm trees fell down and no damage to anything.

Lived in Bermuda for many years and now Florida.
I guess Hurricanes come in the summer package every year for me.
Been thru' several hurricanes in Bermuda but personally when I was there, no direct hits. Close calls, pass-by's...but still winds up to 90mph plus! And you can't evacuate in Bermuda, you face it.

I just got back from a road trip to Key West. I came back along the gulf side of FL. Like an idiot, I didn't fill up in Miami. So I was running out of gas as I arrived around Ft. Myer. What was I thinking! I got off the interstate four times and there was no power to any of the gas stations.

My on-boad computer was reading for distance "--". Long story short, after doubling back and waiting 30 minutes at the only gas station with a generator, I filled up 17.1 gallons. My tank is only 16 3/4. I couldn't beleive it.

I took a bunch of pictures, I'll try to up load a few when I get my camera out.

Wow your fuel pump musta been empty too! It's still hairy down there, my company had an entire warehouse of product get sucked up along with the roof over in Punta Gorda. I may be making a trip down there to help get the IT infrastructure in place to get it moving again..

The power of a hurricane is unbelievable. I was about 14 years old when Hurricane Agnes ripped thru Pennsylvania in 1972. The river here was 23 FEET above flood stage. Yes 23 FEET. We were out of power for days. The first four blocks from the river of the entire city were under water.

Penske Racing has it's Indy Car headquarters here right along the river. At that time they were responsible for prepping the IROC Z Camaros for the IROC races. They had to evacuate FAST so they fired up all the cars and drove them up the main street to higher ground.
