Spyware and other security software?

The two most common programs are Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy. You download and install the programs, and run the full scan with each program once every few weeks or so. The interval at which you run the programs depends on how much web browsing you do and what kind of websites you go to. For instance, Eric enjoys visiting beastiality websites which contain tons of spyware and adware, so he has to run Ad-Aware and Spybot about once a week.

There are new programs out there that sit in your system tray or in the background and are constantly monitoring for incoming spyware and adware and try to block it on the spot. Personally, I just run the scans once every few weeks because I don't like the background-running programs as they use up some system resources.
