Yeah, it seems that all of the call centers are over there now.

I especially love dealing with Dell for a warrantied hardware failure - getting some person in India you can't understand whose telling you to do this and that to the computer to troubleshoot it even though you have told them exactly what is wrong with the machine and what needs to be replaced.

I hate it. It's a sad, sad day when American companies have decided it is cheaper for them to pay toll free charges for an international call than to pay someone in America to sit at a computer terminal and answer your call in a language the customer can actually comprehend. Pisses me off.

Its actually voice over IP vpn's so costs in communication respect is negligible. Those call center people are also paid very little. They all have bachelors degrees too.

My company, on the other hand is trying to get away from the Indain call center. Its actually making things worse than for what we save in costs.

They cant even say goodbye / end conversation without going through an exact process that makes the average american want to hang up early. There are NO common grounds for communication what so ever. They have different mentalities when considering our cultural/sociological/phycological qualities. [screwy]

I was watching this History channel documentary on call centers and the people "applying" for these positions have sepecific schooling, that gives them the know how, to even be considered for the job, even before they are trained by the call center company - much like you take a CCNA course to work with networks here in america. In the 6 month (!) long schooling, they are taught to "become" american to better communicate with us by talking like us and thinking like us. You would NOT believe the differences and difficulty they have with being world leader third-world.

Oh, I know exactly what you are talking about. I spent the summer working very closely with a surgeon who is from India (he grew up there, went to college there, went to medical school there, did his residency there - he's just here for 2 years working on a fellowship and then will be going back to India). The culture and communication is so different it is truly amazing. He had a lot of trouble understanding the redneck culture of Memphis/Arkansas/Mississippi. [rofl] Very different mentalities between the culture of India and the culture of America.

I didn't know they were using voice over IP - that makes perfect sense.

man, i missed it.. :( i wanna see it!! i love conan. it's sweet that he's gonna get the tonight show gig.. in 2008!!

anyway the huge shift to outsourcing to india was due to tech advance in the telecom field, mainly the VOIP thanks to advances in fiber optics.. but just as Mr. German Drangonfly (xLibelle) was saying, outsourcing is now incurring other "costs" which is painfully obvious to most, but not for capitalistic bottomline i guess.

funny thing about indian people: (not to knock on anyone, but explain me this) how could the offical language be English, yet no one speaks it well, and how the hell do they understand each other? i draw the line at Apu.
