Google just released a VERY detailed picture of area51 which I assume means they will be declassifying the area eventually.
I'm sure it's pretty obvious what they used the area for... SR-71 blackbird, B-2 Bomber, VTOL vehicles, and the stealth bomber and fighter. I'm sure they've done more than just this, but seeing the extensions of the runways, and the old unused runways (yellow X's painted on them), it's obvious the area was primarily made for aircraft and weapons testing (craters from the nuclear tests are north west of area 51...)
