I remember driver's ed in high school.. there was a point where I was backing up.. going about 0.000005 MPH, and I touched the gas pedal so that we might actually get where we were going within our lifetimes. Boy, did I get chewed out! "Don't use the throttle unless you have too!!!!" Okay boss, we'll get there sometime.. gawd knows when. He was kind of weird. Then we saw a lady who locked up all her brakes and ended up upside down in a ditch. My instructor immediately reached in and unlatched her seatbelt, resulting, of course, in her falling on her head. Many lessons to be learned there, but darned if I know what they were. [rofl]

I wish I had saved a pic to post here.. it's classic.. a picture of a driver who had taken his driver's test, and all you could see was the back end of this car sticking out from the side of the Motor Vehicle building.. which he had apparently rammed and broken right through the wall. Want to bet on whether he passed his test? [rofl]

First drove my parents 1985 318i auto at the age of 14 (in 1989). Almost convinced my parents to buy me a 1972 Porsche 914 1.7 that summer. (Our BMW mechanic was selling it for cheap, say $2000).

Got my learner's permit at 15.5, license at 16. Passed the Driver's test with a perfect score.

First drove stick on the test drive of what would become my first car, a 1987 Acura Legend L. Great cars those old Legends. Still a great choice in the value class, say under $3500.

First experience on a racetrack was in 1998, Touring at Road America. Done that about six times since, a few autocross style 'car control' events, and stepped up to my first high performance driving school last October, with the badger bimmers. (Who have my NSX on their homepage! http://www.badgerbimmers.org/ )

Doing a school at Blackhawk Farms, IL, this Friday, Octoberfast at RA this October.

Lifetime learning is the way to go, in driving and, indeed, in all things.
