Reasons? 30% of toshiba laptops we sell at staples come back with cracked touch pads and screens -- without abuse (sometimes they get them, turn them on, and find 10 problems with it right away.)

Toshiba's do not have acceptable screens to me either. I'd be happy with a standard XGA screen, but toshiba's are very low quality. They also do not have the performance to weight/portability that I would like to buy. So far Dell and IBM are my picks. Everyone I know with a 600m (Dan has one.."frolf") is VERY pleased with it.

The laptops I've used that I have been impressed with are Dell (Their higher end notebooks, like the 600m), Acer, and IBM.
Well, it sounds like you already have your mind made up. Just speaking from my experience with laptops - you asked for opinions.

I don't think Dell's quality isn't anything special, though. I've used so many different laptops and I've seen so many others. Toshiba isn't popular here, but they are a very strong company in other countries. I know quite a few people who have had to send their laptops back to Dell for repair, but other people with other laptops have had to do the same thing.
My feeling is that laptops are all the same shit in terms of quality and reliability. Just find a laptop that fits your budget and has all the features you need and go for it. My dad has gone through a couple of small-company laptops (he know only purchased the Sony Vaio laptops) and one of them gave him some problems but the small-ass company was more than happy to repair it under warranty for him.
Dell certainly has quite a reputation for their line of laptops (build quality, performance, warranty/service), but I think it came out of necessity. Dell does sell a shitload of laptops - I wouldn't be surprised if Dell sells more laptops than all of their other computers combined - so I think Dell has no choice but to make sure that every laptop they sell is a GOOD laptop.

**EDIT**
I didnt read your post before, I didnt see you did not want an Apple. Sorry.

Get an Apple iBook or Powerbook, they are actually quite reasonably priced if you get the student discounts (you can see them by going into www.apple.com , the to Store, then to "Education"). About $200 off each book.

They know to buy an alienware.
Everybody knows how to buy an Alienware. All you have to do is head over to your local Best Buy and you can purchase one from there now. Alienware has gotten so big that they've lost that "custom gaming PC" image that real gamers love.
VoodooPC is a GREAT company if you want a true custom gaming PC.
