Sure, and having the kid scrub the floors of your house and clean the break dusk off your BMW with a microfiber cloth and a bottle of specialty cleaning fluid that cost more than his mom's car will make him feel great. [:p]
No, but it may teach him there are consequences for his actions, without getting him into the juvenile system.

Coming from someone with experience in this area, I think it is a great idea. Charging him would have done nothing for him. People need to chill out on their response to minor property offenses and other non-violent crimes (and yes, I have been a crime victim on more than one occasion). We simply don't have the money to keep locking people up for such things, and we as a society have just about given up on rehabilitation. All he would have learned in juvenile detention was how to be a better little thug.

If you want to really make an impression, do the yard work with him. Talk to him while doing it. Ask him about his life. Feed him too (kids respond well to food). Hopefully after the 4th weekend, you'll have made a permanent impression on him. I was a criminology major. The only study that gave me any hope is that kids usually grow out of these things. It helps if they actually have a positive influence in their life, however brief. Maybe you can change a life. That kid's parents sure as hell aren't doing the job. Maybe the parents are scum. Maybe they're too busy working two jobs to be able to watch their kids. Who knows. If you have the time, maybe you can save a life.

Very well said codex57 and brahtw8. I agree with you 100%. Giving the kids a juvenile record (especially for egging a car) for this type of offence wont do any of the involved parties any good, nor will it make you feel better or make the car back to normal. Talking to the kids, while making them work off the offence in a productive manner, will only help them understand and be responsible for their actions in a constructive way. That's what this world needs more of. A little more understanding and compassion instead of just throwing out troubled youth to the dogs in jail. What will that give them? A better criminal mind is all.
