My sister has a V3 RAZR and it sux0rs in the sense of battery life. I've had Cingular for a while and can't complaint the signal is always good and no dropped calls.

;)

I might switch to T-Mobil though just cuz their 1500min is much better than my 1000min + roll over.

I'm a NOKIA guy overall though :p

You didn't but you are, for some reason, "against" verizon because of their phone choices, and you love the razor, except for verizon's becuase of "slow menu's"

SO to me it sounds like you want to get rid of the GOOD service provider in exchange for faster menu's.

the reality of the situation is that sooner or later people will figure out how to bypass verizon's gui. and i am against verizon because of not only the lack of variety in phone choices, but because of how damn expensive they are just because of their relatively proprietary service (given that gsm is much more of a "norm") but to say that i want to get rid of verizon knowing that i had just gotten rid of my gsm service, thats out of place. i like the service i get in montana, if i went to school in MN i wouldn't have verizon. i hate the stupid red bar that their gui put across my phone, especially because i have seen how beautiful a barebones v3 is.

the solution? i can transfer schools, build a gsm tower here at MSU, or live with it.

i'll live with it for the time being.

Worldwide you're right, GSM is more of a 'norm' but in the US, it is the minority of service. Verizon's service area is almost bigger than ALL other cell services combined. I hated all gsm phones I used. CDMA's clarity is better, verizon has much faster data access, and better range. GSM's only real advantage is if you travel or battery life is of utmost importance to you.

Personally, I welcome my new "red bar"

wow you're red bar is huge, there is no way i could live with it. and data transfer speeds aren't an issue here, i'm in a 1x area so the most i get is what 14kbps???? boo on that, therefore i don't have a data plan. if i lived in an Evdo area i'd most definately have a big data plan, using my razr as a usb modem on my laptop would be a nonstop thing, but like i said #1 is that i go to school in a 1x area, and the town i go to school in was ranked in the top 5 for best wifi college towns

Yea we only have 1x here, but I got 150kbps lastnight according to cnet... Anyways, evdo is coming so I don't mind.

You can't tether your phone to a laptop without paying $45/month for data plus another $15/month for tether capability. It's the same with their whole lineup. Kind of sucks but I'm sure there are 'hacks' for it. Wifi > all anyways. I think eventually cellphone towers will not exist, and will be replaced by lots of access point types of things. That, or at least cellphones with much higher frequencies.

well wifi is going to go lower for frequencies soon. come 2009 there will be no tv via rabbit ears, and thats when isp's will take over those frequencies. high freq's suck cause they can't go far. i'm not 100% but i'm pretty sure the way i've got my razr set up right now its ready to rock on the internet for just data fees, and maybe not even that, i haven't tested much yet but there are several people who have proxies set up for free wifi over at howardforums. and as far as i know the motorola usb modem driver + a standard data plan or free wifi and it works just fine

Probably not. Ghz frequencies are neeeded to achieve the quality of communications/data rates they get today - quality will go down. Also, you would need rabbit ear size antennas for cell or wifi to work at TV freqs, and huge batteries. The lower the frequency, the higher the power required to generate an RF signal.

Sounds like a faulty battery, I run mine for about 4-5 days with bluetooth turned on even, before I need to charge.

That could be why I get so much extra time out of mine tho, I use a handsfree most of the time so I'm not opening it, causing it to light up that big screen so much.

"rabbit ears" aren't going anywhere dan. How will people recieve OTA digital tv signals without an antenna?

i'll dig for the story, but it was on bbc.
Ah my misinformed dan! Over the air DT (Digital Television) is completely free and digital. It is picked up via over the air recievers, which use antenna's. You need a reciever, ie the $80 set top box they are talking about. I am positive that where you go to school, or at least back home, nearly all stations broadcast in DT now. Yes, this is completely free high definition television with digital audio, typically dolby digital 5.1 for the prime time shows.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=422073

Yes, the analog UHF and VHF channels are going away completely, so is analog cable. It is all being replaced by free OTA DT broadcasts, and digital cable/satelite.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_television#Terrestrial
"Consumers see DTT as a way to obtain more programs from their existing TV antenna at the cost of a set-top box or new television" (yes it's wikipedia, so handle that quote with caution if you feel you must)

Around here, when HD was mad new, they were using rabbit ears to broadcast the signal. The Twin Towers was broadcasting the signal but after 9/11 obviously that stopped and they completely abadoned the system. If you want HD now, you gotta get it from digital cable from your cable company.

Either way, with the introduction and spread of HDTV, things are just really messy for television right now. In less than a decade, once HDTV becomes the standard (hopefully), everything should get sorted out.

Congress has allocated $1.5bn (£844m) to ensure Americans can convert their TV sets to receive digital signals.
Yet another piece of screwed up, money wasting legislation. Each and every household will get $80 to buy a converter. The net result of this legislation is simply to support higher prices of converters. Manufacturers CAN build these boxes for $15 - $20, retail for $40. But why should they sell them that cheap if the Feds support higher prices through subsidies????

ebay [thumb] I do think forcing the switch is a little rediculious. Think of all the closed circuit television systems will need replaced to not be fined by the FCC

You're right dan, I'd totally take fast menu's over better service. I mean what's near-perfect service when you have to deal with slow menu's.
kinda to back towards the original topic...
i have had 3 moto's within the last 4 years with 3 different service providers. i now have the moto v551, and i am so sick of motorola. yes, the OS that all of their phones used has crashed many times, as often as windows 95. often times when i try and dial a number, it says "call failed". the charger falls out of the phone for no apparent reason, and when it is in the phone it will often say "unable to charge". after taking the battery out and putting it back in, it will charge fine. it lags....a lot. my buddy has a razr and loved it at first, but it has the call failed problem a lot now too. i have plenty of other crap to rap on moto with...
