below a conventional coal fired plant

looks the same, it basically is, only that the coal is being burned and used onky once, the HRSG on the contrary burns gaz, LNG or bio waste gaz in a turbine. that turbine powers a generator. the hot exhaust then work the same way as the coal fire in the coal power station.

PWR = Pressurized Water Reactor - Pressurized so reactor water doesn't reach boiling point. Hot water passes thru a steam generator - steam generator creates steam in the turbine loop.
They are 2 isolated loops, therefore no radioactivity in turbine area.

BWR = Boiling Water Reactor - Reactor Water boils to create steam that drives turbines.
Reactor water passes thru dryers, creating dry steam and losing most but not all radiation. Steam drives turbines, condenses thru heat exchanger for isolated cooling tower loop, pumped back to reactor.

We went to this guy who did that with our ECO club. This alternative fuel is way INEFFICIENT since it is biological (imagine how many farmers need to be involved). It also stinks like hell and is just unrealistic for mass production use. They have better chance making gas cars that bio-degradible gas cars. In a way its like making a bio bomb.
I hear it smells like popcorn (Read in popular science a while ago)

And the real problem with hydrogen powered vehicles (fuel cell or combustion)? Ask BMW, or American Honda (both have hydrogen powered vehicles) where they get the Hydrogen - Natural Gas. So you're still dependent on fossile fuels.

All you chemestry types must know that the bond between H and O2 is pretty strong (this is why water doesn't "burn") where the bond between carbon and hydrogen is pretty weak (also why gas and other hydrocarbons do "burn"). While hydrogen is good fuel source, it's not very plentyfull (it really likes to get together with O2) or easy to make from anything other than hydrocarbon.

And by the way, the only byproduct of buring gasoline is CO2 and H2O.

It seems kinda dumb to make hot water from a nuclear reaction when you really want electon flow...

you are correct that at the moment H2 is produced by working with natural gaz. but first we have more natural gaz than oilf for the next decades and second the industry is improving the procedure to get H2 out of the H2O connection. water electrolysis. when that is working properly and at a economical ratio we have a never source.

gazoline engines have nothing else than Co2 and H2o??? where did you here that funny stuff?? in car exhausts produced by gazoline fired engines is: Co, Co2, No, So2 etc....

I believe he is refering to complete burning of gasoline, since gasoline does not burn completely in the real world.........

I read an article a while back about H2 and what happens when it does not completely burn. It sounded very bad for the environment. I will see if I can find it.

I also saw this about a new product called Power Balls here (no joke) [:p] sodium hydride covered in plastic. It reacts with water to produce H2 gas.

It sounds very interesting.

the article says it under the production section. the new NaOH will be used as raw material to make new NaH, the stuff that those balls are made off.
interesting though is what it needs and how much it needs to recycle that. and what do they do with the remaining platic shell?

Wadula -

Your posts seem to indicate that you might work in the power industry? What is going on with coal plants? Is there anything happening that will make coal plant emissions cleaner to reduce oil/gas dependency?

Yup - This is the kind of stuff that makes you wonder what the hell we are doing:

Water -> Hydroelectric power -> Electricity -> Manufacture Hydrogen & Oxygen -> Hydrogen Car -> Combustion -> WATER !!!!!!!! [rofl]

EXACTLY!

And yes I was making the point that complet hydrocarbon combustion results in only two by products, but as you know complete combustion does not occur, and our atmosphere isn't made of pure oxygen.

Hydrogen is a bad fuel source because it takes more energy to produce it, then you get from using it. It won't reduce emmissions, only change the composotion of them, many of which are quite nasty.

All we need to do is learn how to harness stupidity and turn the anger that it causes into a source of energy. I bett you I put out at least 400 megawatts of energy being pissed off at stupid people[thumb]

Heh hook it up to me and put peta, RIAA, DMCA, slow drivers, people who do not speak english, and get gay guys to hit on me -- I'll put out a nuclear power plant of anger. [}:)]

All you would have to do is show me repeated pictures of Martha Stewart, Hillary Clinton, Eminem, and Jane Fonda. Then get somebody to drive with with their blinker constantly on, and not speak english. I could definately run my own car. Think about it. How often do you get pissed off running to wrok¿ You just hook this cord up to you and start rolling away and sooner or later, somebody will piss you off enough to energize you car.[thumb][mad][rofl]

LOL [werd] I absolutely hate public transit. The damn busses ALWAYS pull out in front of me and LITERALLY run me out into the other lane!! aah! I also hate it when i'm running like 4 minutes late, and could make it on time if there wasnt this old lady in front of me EVERY TIME i'm late!!
